A vision of urban spaces that unify, uplift and connect us with our shared humanity.

Origin (by Kashi)

“Curiosity and a vision of deep connections between strangers inspired the creation of “Circles of Space”. Inspired by others such as Marina Abramovic (The Artist is Present, 2012), and other eye-gazing experiments, this project came to life in 2018.

It began as a street art project on busy streets and plazas, gathering spots and areas with many pedestrians and a vibrant energy. I will set up two chairs facing each other, and sit on one of the chairs. Written on a sign or chalkboard are words like “free eye gazing”, “see and be seen”, “share 1 minute”, or something similar. Most people will walk by, either uninterested, or perhaps curious but unsure. Some that feel drawn, join in for a few minutes or longer. Sometimes words are exchanged in the end, other times simply enjoying the silence is perfect.

The responses and experience gained so far have been of great value. Many find it enjoyable and rewarding to connect and to feel seen, through sharing moments of silence and eye-gazing together. Some can find it challenging, unconventional, or even strange. I try not to define the project to people and freely let each person have their own experience. This is to keep things non-dogmatic, dynamic, and ever-evolving.

Since its inception, the project has evolved into a sort of pop-up community. Friends join, locals challenge each other to try, or gaze with each other. The natural progression is the gaze station, semi-permanent or permanent installations for humanizing and connecting each other on a sensory level.
